I have done more vitreoretinal surgery than anyone in the world (29,000 cases), am a mechanical and electrical engineer with 105 patents issued or pending. I developed many of the machines, tools and techniques used by vitreoretinal surgeons worldwide. I have operated in 26 countries and lectured in 43. My book, Vitreous Microsurgery, is in the 5th edition and five languages and widely used by fellows and experienced surgeons alike worldwide.

Tell us a little about yourself….
Dr. Wascher is a Surgical Oncologist, professor of surgery, and a widely published author.
Dr. Wascher graduated from the University of California at Irvine with a B.S. degree in the Biological Sciences (Honors in Research), with an emphasis in Cognitive Neurosciences. Subsequently, Dr. Wascher received his M.D. degree (magna cum laude) from the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. After completing medical school on a U.S. Army scholarship, Dr. Wascher performed his internship, in Surgery, at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco. Following his internship, Dr. Wascher spent a year at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where he performed a clinical fellowship in Neurosurgery.
Dr. Wascher completed residency training in Surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, and was then assigned to Darnall Army Hospital at Fort Hood, Texas. While assigned to Fort Hood, Dr. Wascher served as the Chairman of the Cancer Program at Darnall Army Hospital, as well as the Chief of General Surgery. Subsequently, Dr. Wascher completed a 3-year research and clinical fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the John Wayne Cancer Institute, in Santa Monica, California. After completion of his fellowship, Dr. Wascher returned to Tripler Army Medical Center as the Chief of Surgical Oncology, and as Director of Research for Tripler Army Medical Center's General Surgery Residency Program. While stationed in Honolulu, Dr. Wascher was also appointed as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Cancer Prevention & Control Program at the University of Hawaii's renowned Cancer Research Center, and also served on the State of Hawaii's Life Sciences Council.

Dr. Wascher surgically manages tumors of the head and neck, breast, chest wall, stomach, small intestines, colon, rectum, lymph nodes, liver, pancreas, adrenal glands, spleen, peritoneum, skin, muscle, and other organs.

In 2006, Dr. Wascher retired from the Army at the rank of Colonel, and was appointed as the Director of the Division of Surgical Oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, and as a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. In December of 2008, Dr. Wascher joined the Kaiser Permanente health care system in Orange County, California. Dr. Wascher is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncology. He is also a full member of the following professional organizations and societies: the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, the Southwest Oncology Group, the Gynecologic Oncology Group, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Community Clinical Oncology Program. Dr. Wascher is also a registered researcher with the NIH.
Dr. Wascher is the author of numerous papers, articles, columns, and books and book chapters on cancer biology and cancer (and other disease) prevention and treatment, as well as other important public health topics. Dr. Wascher is also the founder and editor of Weekly Health Update, a leading global health information website (www.doctorwascher.com). He has also frequently appeared on television and radio programs to discuss many cancer and non-cancer health topics. Dr. Wascher also serves as a Medical Expert and Consultant in Oncology, Surgery, Social Media & Medicine, and in other healthcare-related areas, for multiple national and international organizations.
Dr. Wascher is the author of the landmark book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race, one of the few evidence-based cancer prevention books ever written for the lay public.

What are the latest developments in your specialty?
As with other surgical disciplines, the discipline of Surgical Oncology has made impressive progress towards less invasive surgery for patients with certain types of cancer. Minimally invasive surgery is now available for many patients with breast cancer, colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, adrenal gland tumors, liver tumors, and other types of benign and malignant tumors. In general, these newer approaches to surgery are associated with less blood loss during surgery, less pain after surgery, and a more rapid recovery from surgery.

I am the Founding Director of the Ocular Tumor Service at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and New York University School of Medicine. In my efforts to save life, conserve eyes and vision; I have pioneered the use of palladium-103 plaque radiation for choroidal melanoma, the use of laser and anti-VEGF treatments for radiation damage to the eye. In 1988, I created a world renowned web site "The Eye Cancer Network" (http://eyecancer.com). I developed many new methods for the diagnosis and treatment of many ocular tumors, holds several patents and has written over 200 hundred scientific publications.
I give lectures frequently at local, national and international meetings. I am board certified by "The American Board of Ophthalmology" and am a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. I am also the chairman of the American Joint Committee on Cancer's Ophthalmic Oncology Task Force and cares for patients from all over the world.

I perform surgery for cancers of the eye, eyelid and orbit. This includes biopsy, resections, cryotherapy and implant radiation therapy.

I see patients with choroidal melanoma, retinoblastoma, metastatic ocular tumors, conjunctival carcinoma and melanoma, as well as benign tumors of the eye, eyelids and orbit.

I hold 4 patents for ophthalmic devices as well as trademarks like "Think of Sunglasses as Sunblock for your Eyes." I have received the Secretariat and Senior Awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and teaching awards from New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and New York University School of Medicine.

The following are some of the latest developments in Ophthalmology; Anti-VEGF therapy for radiation, retinopathy and radiation optic neuropathy, Slotted plaque therapy for tumors near, touching or surrounding the optic nerve, Monosomy 3 as a biomarker for metastasis of choroidal melanoma, RNA analysis as a biomarker for metastasis of choroidal melanoma, and PET/CT imaging of choroidal melanoma (including using SUV as a biomarker for metastasis).

In my previous life I've studied natural sciences, physics, chemistry, life sciences and medicine. I got a medical degree MD, PhD in the context of surgery and after 8 years of clinical experience, I became a specialist in internal medicine and got later on an additional license for environmental medicine and as a national licenser for private airmen and private divers.
My training history: general medicine, angiology, cardiology, internal medicine, psycho somatic medicine, environmental medicine, nano-biology and nano-structure - medicine, and since approximately 15 years additionally Lyme disease with a focus on its so called Co-infections.
What procedures do you specialize in?
In my present life I am engaged in diagnosis and treatment of Multisystem diseases caused by Immunodeficiency, mainly by chronically acting bacteria or protozoa, and additionally by viruses. I work as a freelance within a private Clinic.

I am specialized in Multi-system diseases that are caused by Lyme-Borreliosis and / or the so called Co-Infections and their consequences.

I grew up in North-Central NJ, did all of my training on the east coast up until renal fellowship which took me to Colorado where I stayed on faculty and was promoted through the ranks until 1997. I then moved to the University of Toledo (formerly the Medical College of Ohio) as Professor and Division Chief of Nephrology and became Chairman of the Medicine Department in 1999, a position I still hold. I also serve as an Associate Dean as well as the president of the University of Toledo Physicians, and I have an active career with time dedicated to teaching, research and clinical practice in addition to administration. I also have a startup company (ADS Biotechnology) based on some of the research I participate in as well as participate in several charitable organizations as a board member (American Heart Association, Alliance for Paired Donation). I currently am serving as the president of the NW Ohio chapter of the American Heart Association. My recreational activities are pretty much limited to exercise and spending time with my wife and two daughters.

I have been awarded an American Heart Association Clinician Scientist Award (1988) and Established Investigator Award (1992). Over my career, I have been awarded more than 30M dollars in grants as principals investigator or co-investigator. I was just awarded a new NIH grant as PI this summer (2011). I have published more than 120 original research papers, 50 review articles and book chapters and 14 patents. I am a fellow of the American Society of Nephrology, the American College of Physicians and the American Heart Association.
What are the latest developments in your specialty?
Our research group has developed a new theory as to why salt intake may lead to cardiovascular disease which suggests new targets for clinical intervention.

I graduated from Yale University and Brown University School of Medicine. I am board certified in both internal medicine and neurology, with a fellowship in electroencephalography (EEG) at the Montreal Neurological Institute. I was medical director of the Carolinas Epilepsy Center, Charlotte, NC, and then Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at Brown University School of Medicine, Providence, RI. Currently, I am a neurohospitalist at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, New London, CT, and medical advisor for the Accordant Health Services Epilepsy Disease Management Program. In addition, I write two regular columns for Medscape.com (Neuro Notes and Epilepsy Notes). Neuro Notes is published twice a month and offers perspectives on newsworthy topics in neurology, while Epilepsy Notes is published once a month and presents the most important developments in epilepsy. I also report news and do interviews from medical conferences.
My favorite hobby is scuba diving and underwater photography.
What procedures do you specialize in?
For neurologists, the most important "procedure" is carefully taking a detailed history and performing a complete physical and neurological examination. Every now and then I do a lumbar puncture.
What diagnoses do you specialize in?
As a neurohospitalist, the most common diagnoses I see are stroke, transient ischemic attack, seizures, delirium, and dementia (pretty much in that order of frequency).

Boyd Gillespie, M.D., M.Sc., did his medical school and surgical training at Johns Hopkins prior to joining the staff at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Charleston, where he is currently a professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. Dr. Gillespie received a Masters in Clinical Research at MUSC which has allowed him to have an expanding role in the development and clinical testing of novel surgical techniques and devices. He currently has funded research focusing on surgical advances in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Dr. Gillespie is a leader in minimally-invasive salivary surgery in the U.S. with the MUSC Salivary Center being designated the U.S. References Center for Salivary Endoscopy by the Karl Storz company. He has trained over 60 surgeons from the U.S., Canada, and Latin America in the treatment of obstructive salivary disorders. Dr. Gillespie is also a leader in the growing field of snoring and sleep surgery with current grant support focused on the development of new surgical methods to treat sleep apnea.

I am an American board-certified family medicine physician with considerable clinical experience both in the U.S. and China. I completed a bachelor’s degree in English at Columbia University (New York) before turning my interests to the medical field. I received my medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine (USA) and my Family Medicine specialty certification from the University of California, San Francisco program at Sutter Santa Rosa Medical Center.
I began my medical career at three different California health care providers: 1) the Russian River Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center; 2) the Petaluma Health Center (USA), and 3) St. Joseph’s Urgent Care Clinics. In 2007, I moved to Beijing and worked for International SOS Clinic and later at the International Medical Center as a staff physician, with frequent consulting opportunities with the United Nations Development Programme as well as the U.S. Embassy. I joined Beijing United Family Healthcare in May 2011 where I am Director of Clinical Marketing and Communications for the UFH chain of hospitals and clinics in China. I am a Board Certified General Surgeon practicing in the Los Angeles area. I completed my internship and residency training in General Surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey where I served as Chief Resident during my final year.
My passion for the field of surgery developed early in my medical school days, and is reflected today in the wide variety of procedures I performs. I have been in practice since 1994, providing the finest in hi-tech eye care, without losing the personalized touch that patients deserve. My days are filled with enjoyment due to the great staff in my office, and the gratification that comes from successfully guiding my patients through their eye care problems.
My family comes first, and I can't wait to get home to my wife, 2 daughters, and dog at the end of the day. We enjoy many activities together, including skiing in the Colorado Rockies, Red Wings Hockey and Michigan Football, and live music. We have travelled extensively together, learning the cultures and languages of many European and middle Eastern Countries.

Most of my surgery is lens exchange surgery, either cataract surgery or ReLex surgery to decrease or eliminate the need for reading glasses. I perform a great deal of LASIK surgery, and was the first in Michigan to perform Implantable Contact Lens Surgery for patients who cannot have LASIK surgery.
